548 was the number tattooed by the Nazis on Dicker-Brandeis’s arm when she was imprisoned in the Nazi camp at Terezin. The camp and the village buildings contain many coats, shoes, and suitcases left behind by inmates. Being within touching distance of objects that once warmed the wearer and now lie abandoned, a soft memorial to the bodies that once inhabited them, was overwhelming.
